VLP Blog Week 1 (1/16/26).

Hello everyone and happy new year, my name is Liam Ambrose; I am a third year student at the University of Central Florida and I am majoring in history with a minor in anthropology. The purpose of this blog is to document my time with my internship at UCF’s Veteran’s Legacy Program. As it is the first week of my internship I have yet to start getting into the thick of the work I will be doing. On Thursday the 15th, the other interns and I met with some staff from the VLP to discuss the first work we will be doing, that being transferring metadata from the VLP website to the National Cemetery Association’s Veterans Legacy Memorial website. However, since as previously stated I have yet to get into the thick of my work here yet, I shall instead use this first post to introduce myself as well as my research interests and what I hope to get out of my time at the VLP.

To introduce myself further, as stated at the start of the post I am a third year student at UCF, however originally I spent my first two years at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, and this is my first full year at UCF. The reason why I chose to do this internship is because in the previous semester I took a course with one of the heads of the VLP, Dr. Amelia Lyons, and she recommended that I apply for the internship. As for my research interests, throughout my time conducting research throughout my time at both UCF and UNF I found that I mostly enjoy conducting research with primary sources, I’ve always found it interesting to see how people thought about something at the time it happened.

As for what I hope to get out of this internship. One of the most significant things I hope to get is this experience will help me stand out in the future when I start my career in history or if I decide to go to graduate school. Another thing I hope to get out of this internship is from what I see, much of the work I will be doing will involve digitization and working with metadata, which are two skills that I am excited to become more proficient with. The final thing I plan to get out of this internship is experience with museum work with my work at the Museum of Military History in Kissimmee as I plan on having a career in public history and am leaning towards museum work, so getting a chance to get some experience with that is very exciting for me. Even though this is just the start of my internship, I am incredibly excited to see where this opportunity will take me.
