VLP Week 6 (2/20/2026)
Hello everyone, this is now week 6 of my internship with UCF’s Veterans Legacy Program. This week didn’t see anything brand new so I’ll mostly just talk about updates for things I have discussed in previous posts. To start out, the thing that I was most excited to talk about in the previous post is me being able to receive compensation for mileage and tolls while traveling to the Museum of Military History in Kissimmee, I am happy to say that I have gotten all the paperwork sorted for that and that I have been accepted to receive reimbursement but there were a few hiccups along the way. The main one being for the form I had to list the start and end date for my travel, the way I thought to fill this out would be I would list the next time I would go to MMH as the start and the end would be the last time I go before spring break. However, after I turned the form in I learned that I needed to resubmit because I needed to include all days when I would go to the museum from now to spring break, which was a little confusing because the form only had a start and end date without any option to add additional days. In the end I resubmitted the form and got approved, dealing with the paperwork and bureaucracy for this was quite tedious, however in the words of the head of the VLP Dr. Lyons “bureaucracy is a French word for a reason,” which is a phrase that I feel I have internalized during my time with this internship.
In other news, this Wednesday I had to cut my time at the MMH short because as mentioned in my previous post Wednesday was the day of the virtual conference with teachers who were working with the VLP to create lesson plans. The part of the conference I had the most involvement with was each group assigned to a different lesson plan would go into breakout rooms to discuss further their lesson plans, my group was working on a USMC history podcast to include in lessons and I was charged with taking notes. As a new member with the VLP I didn’t have the most active role in the conference but nevertheless I found it useful as I haven’t attended something like it before so it was nice to get some firsthand experience.
That’s all I have for this week, I hope you all have a good weekend and I’ll see you next week.
