VLP Week 8 (3/6/2026)
Hello everyone, this is now week 8 of my internship with UCF’s Veterans Legacy Program. Last week I didn’t have a whole lot to talk about, but as I predicted in my last post this week I was much more busy both with working on midterms but also there has been an exciting new development with my internship.
But first I’ll get the usual out of the way. On Wednesday I did metadata and scanning at the Museum of Military History in Kissimmee, our team had finished the scanning and metadata for the collection on the first veteran we were working on so now we moved on to a new set of veterans and their documents, so that will show some new and interesting sources but the work itself remains largely similar which has gotten me down to a routine, which I don’t overly mind. And furthermore I still am going to be working on creating pdfs for VLM even if we still don’t have the go ahead from the VA to upload them.
But now it's time to talk about something new. This Tuesday for our meeting, instead of having it in our usual place in the CHDR we held our meeting at the Texas Instruments lab. The reason for this is that the VLP is working on something for a lesson plan where students can learn about national cemeteries by doing headstone rubbings so that they can get a personal hands-on experience with the veterans they are learning about. However, as you can imagine it is not always practical to ship an entire classroom out to a national cemetery to do this, so in response our team has decided to create replicas of headstones from national cemeteries so they can have this experience in the classroom itself. So we went to the TI lab to see if some of the equipment they have can help us, and they had some pretty cool stuff there, the two things that we mostly focused on were their 3D printer and laser cutter, which is the first time I think I had seen either in person.
As for what this has to do for me, during the meeting it was asked if any of the team wanted to help out and learn how to use some of the equipment, and I volunteered to help. As such, this upcoming Wednesday Myself and the other team members who volunteered to help will be going back to the lab to discuss using the equipment. I am very excited for this as this is something completely new for me, as mentioned previously I had never even seen a 3D printer in person before, so I am very excited about that and will be eager to tell you all what happens next week.
But until then that’s all I have for this week, I hope you all have a great weekend and I’ll see you next week.
